Auto ID Card
A wallet-sized document proving auto insurance coverage that must be carried in the vehicle, required by state law in most jurisdictions.
What It Is
An Auto ID Card (also called proof of insurance card or insurance identification card) is a document that proves auto insurance coverage is in force for a specific vehicle. Most states require drivers to carry an auto ID card in the vehicle at all times and present it during traffic stops, accidents, and vehicle registration.
For commercial accounts, auto ID cards are issued for each covered vehicle on the Business Auto Policy. The card typically shows the insurer name, policy number, named insured, vehicle identification (year, make, model, VIN), effective and expiration dates, and the state-required minimum coverage amounts.
Auto ID cards are distinct from ACORD 25 certificates, which show auto liability coverage on a broader level. The ID card is vehicle-specific and is required by law to be in the vehicle, while the ACORD 25 is a contract compliance document provided to third parties.
Why It Matters for Brokers
For brokers managing commercial auto accounts with large fleets, producing and distributing auto ID cards is a significant operational task. A trucking company with 50 vehicles needs 50 individual ID cards at every renewal. Mid-term vehicle additions require new cards to be produced and delivered before the vehicle goes into service. Failure to provide timely ID cards can result in traffic citations, impounded vehicles, and regulatory violations for the client.
Real-World Example
A landscaping company with 28 trucks and trailers renews its commercial auto policy on July 1. The broker must produce 28 individual auto ID cards with the correct VIN, vehicle description, and coverage information for each unit. Three weeks after renewal, the company purchases two new trucks that must be added to the policy. The broker adds the vehicles mid-term and produces two new ID cards. Without the ID cards, the new trucks cannot legally operate — a driver is pulled over on Day 2 of operation and needs to show proof of insurance for the newly purchased $65,000 truck.
Common Mistakes
- 1Not producing ID cards for newly added vehicles promptly, leaving the client's drivers without proof of insurance.
- 2Issuing ID cards with incorrect VIN numbers, which can cause problems during traffic stops and accident reports.
- 3Failing to collect and destroy old ID cards when vehicles are removed from the policy to prevent fraudulent use of expired proof of insurance.
