CG 20 10

The standard ISO additional insured endorsement for ongoing operations, granting coverage to an additional insured for the named insured's current work.

What It Is

CG 20 10, titled "Additional Insured — Owners, Lessees or Contractors — Scheduled Person or Organization," is the most commonly used ISO endorsement for adding an additional insured to a CGL policy for ongoing operations. It provides coverage to the additional insured only for liability caused, in whole or in part, by the named insured's acts or omissions in the performance of ongoing operations for the additional insured.

The edition date of CG 20 10 matters significantly. The 04 13 edition provides coverage for liability caused "in whole or in part" by the named insured, which is the broadest language. Earlier editions, such as 10 01 and 07 04, contain more restrictive language. The pre-2004 editions (like 11 85) provided much broader coverage but are no longer in print.

CG 20 10 covers only ongoing operations — it does not provide coverage for claims arising from the named insured's completed work. For completed operations coverage, the additional insured endorsement CG 20 37 must also be added.

Why It Matters for Brokers

CG 20 10 is the endorsement referenced in the vast majority of commercial contracts requiring additional insured status. Brokers must not only verify that the endorsement is on the policy but must also check the edition date. Many contracts specify a minimum edition or require "the broadest available" language. Using an older edition when the contract requires a newer one can result in a compliance failure and potential E&O claim.

Real-World Example

A GC requires all subcontractors to provide CG 20 10 04 13 and CG 20 37 04 13. A flooring subcontractor's broker mistakenly requests CG 20 10 10 01, which contains narrower causation language. During the project, a visitor slips on improperly installed flooring and sues both the GC and the sub. Under the 10 01 edition, the additional insured coverage might be limited by the narrower "caused by" language, potentially not covering the GC if the injury was partly due to the GC's own negligence. The 04 13 edition's "caused in whole or in part" language would have provided broader coverage.

Common Mistakes

  • 1Not checking the edition date of CG 20 10 and assuming all versions provide the same coverage — the 04 13, 07 04, and 10 01 editions differ significantly.
  • 2Using CG 20 10 alone without also adding CG 20 37 for completed operations coverage, leaving the additional insured exposed after project completion.
  • 3Accepting a carrier-proprietary additional insured endorsement without comparing its language to the CG 20 10 form required by the contract.

How brokerageaudit.com Handles This

Policy Checker identifies CG 20 10 endorsements by both form number and edition date, flagging any edition that does not match the contract requirement. It automatically checks for the presence of CG 20 37 when CG 20 10 is found and alerts the broker if the completed operations endorsement is missing. COI Manager references the specific endorsement form numbers when generating certificates.
