ACORD Forms & Documentation

ACORD Edition Date

The version identifier on an ACORD form indicating when it was last updated and which version is in use.

What It Is

The ACORD Edition Date is the version identifier printed in the lower-left corner of every ACORD form, typically in MM/YY format (e.g., 03/16 for the March 2016 edition). This date indicates when the form was last revised and which version of the form is being used.

ACORD releases form updates periodically to reflect changes in coverage language, regulatory requirements, and industry practices. Each new edition may add fields, modify existing fields, or change the form layout to accommodate evolving needs.

Carriers and certificate holders may require specific edition dates for certain forms. Using an outdated edition can cause processing delays, rejection, or compliance issues.

Why It Matters for Brokers

Edition dates are not just administrative details — they have real coverage implications. For example, different editions of the CG 20 10 additional insured endorsement provide significantly different coverage scope. The 04/13 edition is broader than the 10/01 edition, and many contracts specify which edition is required. Brokers who do not track edition dates risk issuing certificates that reference outdated forms, submitting applications on obsolete editions, or failing to comply with contractual requirements that specify a particular form version.

Real-World Example

A certificate holder rejects an ACORD 25 because the broker used the 09/14 edition instead of the current 03/16 edition. The older edition does not include the field layout the certificate holder's automated verification system expects. The broker updates to the current edition and reissues the certificate, resolving the rejection within hours.

Common Mistakes

  • 1Not checking the edition date when downloading ACORD forms from third-party sources that may host outdated versions.
  • 2Confusing the endorsement edition date (e.g., CG 20 10 04 13) with the ACORD certificate form edition date.
  • 3Failing to update form templates in the agency management system when ACORD releases new editions.

How brokerageaudit.com Handles This
